Major Food Groups Needed for a Healthy Diet

Finding the Right Healthy Diet

Food is basically a source of fuel for the body. Without food we’ll just run down and come to a halt. Too many of the wrong foods and we won’t function as well as we should. Protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals are vital as part of a healthy diet. Food groups are divided into grains, fruit and vegetables, meats and proteins, dairy and fats, sweets and oils. Eating protein and carbohydrates each day as well as at least five portions of fruit or vegetables is the best way to maintain a healthy body. We all need the three basic groups, protein, carbohydrates and fats to stay in peak condition. We also need vitamins and minerals to supplement this. A good rule is to have the balance right.

Which Foods to Choose

Protein foods are the building blocks of our bodies; they add lean muscle and keep us well. Mainly found in milk, eggs, meat, fish and cheese, as well as some pulses such as peas, beans and lentils. Carbohydrates create bulk and make us feel fuller and provide energy and could be potatoes, rice or bread. Foods which contain fat are cream, oils and other dairy products. We require trace vitamins and minerals as part of a healthy diet to fight off infection and to repair the body. Vitamin C from citrus fruits or Potassium, which can be found in bananas for example, or the B group vitamins, found in grains ad cereals which are vital for skin, nail and hair health as well to protect and boost the immune system. Iron, good for the production of red blood cells can be found in liver and kidney, while calcium for strong teeth and bones can be found in milk and oily fish such as mackerel or sardines.

How you choose to make these vital components a part of your daily intake is up to you. But a good meal will normally consist of 1 part protein and 1 part carbohydrate to 2 parts vegetables or fruit. Small regular meals are best and eat less as the day progresses.
